Reflecting on how these memories will soon be lost to him, it’s a stark reminder to Miles (and the player) that this world is populated by real people and their experiences, and that is worth fighting for. There’s also the prerequisite stealth options which — and this cannot be stressed enough — serve zero purpose for Spider-Man. As with most games, the choice to stick with stealth attacks will almost aways slow down the gameplay and result in most players triggering fisticuffs just to get back to the action. Thankfully, the team at Insomniac seem to have realized this, creating very few scenarios where the stealth is forced outside of mini-game sequences and, of course, Mary Jane. He’s working on his college admissions essay with the help of his Spider-tutor and has finally gotten a hang of the superhero schtick.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is one of the most anticipated action-adventure games, bringing the thrilling world of Spider-Man to life with stunning graphics and immersive gameplay. And sure, more of what came before does mean that Spider-Man 2 retreads less successful ground, like the first game’s buzz-killing science puzzles. However, the good far outweighs the bad, and a few new gameplay mechanics freshen up aspects of both traversal and combat. Altogether, it’s a great game and one well worth seeing all the way through from its bombastic beginning to its emotional end.

That would be Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy from developer Eidos-Montreal, a single-player action-adventure game starring the space-faring super team. Taking on the role of Star-Lord, you can give orders to Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax during combat, comboing teammate abilities for maximum effect. From twiping my first web to unlocking that mighty Platinum trophy, my time with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 clocked in around 28 hours. The time spent purely on the main story I estimate came in around the 19 hours mark, and that’s a play-through done at a fairly leisurely pace. Hopes were high when the teasers at the end of both Spider-Man and Miles Morales teased the arrival of Venom. And, thankfully, it’s the only part of the story they actually did well. Using it to tell a tragic tale of two friends, instead of the more standard Eddie Brock story. Insomniac easily could have simply reused the map from Spider-Man and Miles Morales. A mostly accurate recreation of New York City, with certain buildings missing and other ones added. It’s all part of delivering an epic Spider-Man adventure directly into your hands.

It might not be the newest or prettiest game on this list, but the vibe and experience hasn’t been replicated by anything before or since, even its own sequels. I tried to create a balanced experience overall and made sure I was tackling just as many side quests and hunting collectibles as I was unravelling the tangled tale. That really helped in unlocking some of the more power abilities and unique suits to use throughout the story missions but also contributed to my time with the game feeling like a complete experience.

That being said, I can’t help but have hoped for a few more flashes of Gotham City to make their way into New York. Miles still gets his time in the spotlight, however, and has some fantastic moments towards the end of the main campaign, even if some of the more interesting explorations of his Puerto Rican/African American culture are reserved for side missions. Obviously, what g28 take away from the story and its diverse cast of characters will be unique to you.
